Just Carl

Carl [kahrl] -noun
1. A strong, robust fellow, especially a strong manual laborer. 2. A miser; an extremely thrifty person. 3. A 25 year old Irish guy with too much to say and not enough people to listen.

I just saw Lotocoti do something like this, so now I must copy.

This won’t be an impressive list to some, but for me, it’s the greatest list ever. I’ve done them in order as pictured.

My consoles/computers through the years

  1. Amstrad (1990): I was about 3 or 4 when I got this. It took half an hour to load a game (from a cassette!), and even then, it was only Pictionary. The alternative was to spend an hour typing in code to make a very shitty game. I think it was Breakout or Pong. It came with a book full of scripts to make various games, but I was too young to have the patience.
  2. Sega Mega Drive (1993): The greatest console of all time. The greatest games of all time: Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2. Enough said.
  3. Sony Playstation (1997): I vividly remember the Christmas morning I got this. The day was spent playing Destruction Derby, shouting “Watch out for those barriers, they’ll only slow ya down!” over, and over, and over againThen came games like Metal gear Solid and The Granstream Saga. I was completely immersed in both worlds. Took a while to come back out.
  4. Gameboy Colour (1999): This was almost entirely used to just play Pokemon Blue. My brother, who was 6 or 7 at the time got one too, but he had Pokemon Red… so that worked out well. Then Yellow came out, and the Trading Card Game for it… all massive time-wasters. Perfect.
  5. Dell Piece of Shit (2001?): Somewhere in the mix was a very terrible Dell computer. It could barely handle the first Civilisation game. But it was also where I saw my first vagina… so yeah.
  6. Xbox (2003): The jump in quality from previous platforms to this blew me away. Although I think I mostly used it for sports games… oh and Splinter Cell… and Fable! Although I didn’t use it too much. I was pretty much “over” consoles by the time I hit 16-17.
  7. Dell Piece of Shit II (2004?): At some point, the family computer got an upgrade. This is still they one they use today. It was the beginning of my obsessions with Championship Manager games, Age of Empires, crappy online games that required 12 hours a day to do well in, and downloading American TV.
  8. Compaq Presario v5000 (2005): I was 18 and in college. Saved up about €1000 in my summer job, and spent about €700 of it on this. At the time, it was as good as anything on sale in standard Irish shops. This laptop meant the start of my “Dark Ages” - it was one thing being able to use the family computer a few hours per day to play games and watch things, but to have my own personal computer in my room? I was doomed from the beginning.
  9. Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile v5535 (2008): At some point, my main laptop broke, so ended up buying this piece of shit for €150. It did the job, but the bloody thing didn’t even have proper speaker. If I didn’t want crappy sound droning from it, I needed headphones. Was actually pretty useful for any game that wasn’t graphics intensive though. Oh and this was my first experience of Vista… bloody hell!
  10. Lenovo z570 (2011): My current baby. i7 processor (3GHz), 6GB Ram, GeForce Something-Something graphics, Windows 7 pro. Magical laptop. First time I’ve spent big money on something I didn’t complain about. Love it.
  11. Xbox 360 (2011): Tumblr only allows 10 photos, so this one is missing. Nothing special to say about it… it is what it is. Skyrim, Call of Duty, and FIFA 12 are all I really play… oh and Fable 3 was pretty good.

Missing from the list are the various things I’ve had, but didn’t own. I’ve been loaned a SNES, a PS2, a Dreamcast, and a couple of those Nitendo DSI thing so I could try the new Pokemon games, then get angry about there “Only being 151 *real* pokemon”.

Oh and the Wii! My family got a Wii a few years back, but that was when I moved out/wasn’t there for a few years. Mario Kart and Resident Evil 4 are the only worthwhile games I’ve come across.
